Today our chicken project took off as we received our first batch of baby chicks. The orphan feeding center will benefit from the profits of this income generating activity so with a little luck we will be successful.
The first photo shows us picking up the 210kg of chicken feed. Then we stop at the Kenchic wholesaler to pick up 300 chicks. Each box contains 100 chicks that are one day old. We count each box of chicks several time which is not an easy feat and then load everyone into the truck.
The road to the village is muddy but passable thanks to our 4WD Land Rover. We prepare the brooder for the baby chicks and set up the feeding trays and drinkers. Finally we transfer the chicks into the brooder and watch them explore their new home. Fortunately, all of the chickens survived the journey and they are now under the watchful eye of Rael and John, my chicken coop attendants.
The group photo shows standing from left, Dr. John Nyambero (Vet and Kenchic Consultant), Me, Sam Ngollo (OGRA Director of Sustainability Programs). Seated are Freida Ajowi (OGRA Project Officer) and Addah Odingo (Administrator Orphan Feeding Center).
And a special thanks to George, our OGRA Foundation driver, who carefully navigated us to the village and back home. We got a bit stuck at one point since our load was so heavy with supplies and an emergency generator on board but he was able to nudge us free. Good job!
